The Submariner, part of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual line, was introduced to the world in 1954 at the Basel spring fair, and has since then been recognized all over
the world as the innovator in diving watches. The Submariner was the first watch to be waterproof to a depth of 100 meters and, Rolex invented the patented Triple
Crown Lock for the watch.
The Submariner is tested at much stronger pressures than the guaranteed depth. Rolex has made use of the popularity of the Submariner among celebrities, such as Jacques
Cousteau, by marketing its connection to undersea discovery. The Submariner has undergone dozens of changes and modifications over the years.
When the Submariner was first manufactured it came with pencil style hands and without the distinctive “Submariner” imprinted on the dial. In 1954 the Submariner ref
number 6200 used the Mercedes hand set, which is now so familiar to the contemporary Rolex owner. The ref number 6200 also came with an oversized winding
crown. Later in the nineteen fifties Rolex began to produce the Submariner with a small crown version, (6536) and an oversized crown version, (6538). Also the Submariner logo
and a depth rating was printed on the dials. In the nineteen sixties Rolex continued to improve the Submariner. Shoulders were placed on the side of the watch to protect the
winding mechanism. A date complication was added and the oversized crown became the standard in Submariner watches.
The movements and waterproofing have been updated, the luminous properties on the hands and dial have been upgraded and the classic model of sports watches has evolved
into the ultimately functional fashion accessory. The uniqueness of each watch from the various production years is a big part of why the Submariner is a sought after watch for
buyers and sellers. With the Submariner, Rolex set the standard for diving watches and functional fashion alike.
